It was one of the most important estates in the country. It had 1st cycle school, chapel, stables, hospital, cellars and a recreational society. Rio Frio failed to renew itself and is now facing bankruptcy.
The empire fell as agriculture lost ground on the 5,200 hectares of land that had the most significant vineyard in the world. It supplied Lisbon from the beginning of the 20th century.
The ruin scenario that is transversal to most of the buildings, which made up one of the most extensive estates in Portugal, designated as a “symbol” in the second half of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, in which the most modern techniques of organization and production were introduced agricultural, between vineyard and montado, continuing the cork production to be one of the main references of the “house”, where there is also place to produce rice, native bovine cattle and Lusitanos and Anglo / Luso / Arabian purebred horses of high aptitude for the equestrian activities.
The famous Palace of Rio Frio retains the grandeur of other times after its management has been separated from the agricultural society, is open to the tourist accommodation. But almost everything around is left to abandonment. “We have been in this for 20 years, and nobody wants to know,” they lament, without forgetting that even the bakery closed down doors and that for years the estate is served with bread from Pinhal Novo (District of Palmela).
